I’ve built a free Android app called MemsFCR that reads live data and fault codes from the MEMS 1.6 / 1.9 ECU in classic Minis (1991-1996). It shows RPM, MAP, coolant and air temperatures, lambda, fuel trims and battery voltage, and it can clear faults. It also has a GPS speedometer, trip computer and fuel economy gauge.
Google requires me to run a closed test with at least 12 people before I can release it publicly, so I’m looking for testers. You don’t need a Mini or a cable to help. There’s a Demo ECU mode (Settings > Demo ECU) that plays back recorded engine data, so you can try everything on any Android phone.
What I’m asking
1. Send me your Gmail or Google account address you use on your Android phone, so I can add you to the tester list. Please don’t post it publicly. Message me instead.
2. When I confirm, open this link on your phone and tap Become a tester, then install the app from Google Play: [opt-in link]
3. Please stay opted in for at least two weeks. Google counts people who stay opted in, and if you leave early it can hold up the whole test. You can uninstall the app at any time without opting out.
4. If you can, have a quick play and tell me what’s confusing, broken or missing. Even “it opened and the speedometer worked” is useful.
Good to know
• Android 8.0 or later.
• To read a real ECU you need an FTDI USB diagnostic cable and a phone that supports USB OTG. Most modern phones do. If yours doesn’t, the app tells you, and everything except live ECU data still works.
• Nothing leaves your phone unless you turn on the optional Road Speed Limits feature, which sends the map area around you to public OpenStreetMap servers. It’s off by default. Full privacy policy: https://memsfcr.co.uk/memsfcr-android-application-privacy-policy/
• The app is not affiliated with MG Rover Group or any vehicle manufacturer.
Thanks very much. Feel free to share this with other Mini owners.
